Peebles (Scottish Gaelic: Na Pùballan) is a burgh in Peeblesshire in the Local Government area of Scottish Borders, lying on the River Tweed. According to the 2001 Census, the population was 8,159.
It is also a Civil Parish in Peebleshire. In 1999 the County of Peebles was noted in "The Land Registration (Scotland) Act 1979 (Commencement No.12), Order 1998", "Explanatory Note: "This Order brings into force on 1 October 1999 in the areas of the Counties of Berwick, East Lothian, Roxburgh, Selkirk and Peebles sections 2(1) and (2) and 3(3) of the Land Registration (Scotland) Act 1979. Section 2(1) and (2) provides for the circumstances in which an interest in land shall be registrable and section 3(3) provides that certain persons are to obtain a real right only by registration."
